At Maclean’s, we tried to find a way to present election results in a way different from all other publications. I came up with the idea of visualizing demographics from the new MPs as quickly as possible — and we were able to get this interactive up within 12 hours of results coming in. How did we do it? Prior to election day, my co-worker collected data on the MPs that we predicted to win each riding (about two per riding, which is about 700 people!) and I built the interactive. As the results came in, we pulled out the winners and dumped them into the project.
