At Maclean’s, we tried to find a way to present election results in a way different from all other publications. I came up with the idea of visualizing demographics from the new MPs as quickly as possible — and we were able to get this interactive up within 12 hours of results coming in. How did we do it? Prior to election day, my co-worker collected data on the MPs that we predicted to win each riding (about two per riding, which is about 700 people!) and I built the interactive. As the results came in, we pulled out the winners and dumped them into the project. This piece was an award finalist at both the 2016 Digital Publishing Awards and the Canadian Online Publishing Awards.
